In short, asbestos can be found in any building constructed or refurbished before the year 2000. Asbestos was widely used in many of the most common building materials due to such desirable qualities as strength, heat-resistance, insulation and resistance to the elements to name but a few!
Although many asbestos surveys and asbestos surveyors are able to 'presume' certain materials are likely to contain asbestos, the only guaranteed yes or no is through sample analysis in a laboratory. Until you have this conclusive result the best advice is to treat the material in question as if it does contain asbestos.
